The southwestern tip of the island is graced by Sea Pines Plantation (the name "plantation" coming from its historical roots), Hilton Head’s first and best known developed community. 

Sea Pines established a precedent for environmental excellence in preservation and planning and became the model for modern-day developments across America.  Sea Pines covers  5,000 acres including a lush 605-acre forest preserve with nature trails and lakes.  Considered a world-class resort in addition to being a residential haven, Sea Pines is the home of four golf courses, including  Harbour Town Golf Links (site of the PGA tour-stop Heritage of Golf), dozens of tennis courts, two charming marinas including the famous Harbour Town Yacht Basin, and an equestrian center.
