Palmetto Dunes is a resort and residential community located at the island's center across from the shops, dining and entertainment of the Shelter Cove area. Palmetto Dunes encompasses 1,800 acres, with three miles of shoreline, an eleven-mile lagoon system (tied to the ocean via tidal gates), and two oceanfront hotels - the Marriott Beach & Golf Resort and The Hilton Resort. The community features the twenty-five court Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center as well as three championship golf courses by George Fazio, Robert Trent Jones and Arthur Hills.

Across Highway 278 from the entrance of Palmetto Dunes is the Shelter Cove community. The crown of the community is Shelter Cove Harbor, the perfect place to watch the sunset.  The harbour area is home to stately yachts, unique shopping and dining, nightly entertainment and weekly fireworks during the summer. The area also features a nearby community park that plays host to island festivals and special events, as well as a shopping mall and a plaza with additional shops, restaurants and a grocery store.

From April through September,  the Dunes Buggy -- a complimentary, on-demand shuttle transports guests around Palmetto Dunes and throughout the Shelter Cove district.
